Peter Rich

Peter Rich is the principle of Peter Rich Architects and a founding partner of Light Earth Designs LLP, a collaboration set up to develop a unique soil-tiled vaulting technology.

In 2009, Peter Rich Architects won the award for the World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Forum in Barcelona. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2010, and his lifetime contribution to architecture was recognised in the same year with a South African Institute of Architects Gold Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the profession on a South African architect.

A house is not a home unless it's a village Peter Rich's distinctive body of work is testament to a lifetime of commitment to the creation of a uniquely African architecture. He has been a pioneer in the documentation of the spatial and aesthetic elements of African tribal settlements and developed an architectural vocabulary that fuses Modernist principles with local tribal convention and sensitivity to material and environment. His practice is distinguished by a deep understanding of context achieved through sustained research into local conditions and close collaboration with communities.

Peter has balanced architectural production with teaching and cultural study, helping to make a significant contribution to the education of an audience for architecture that extends beyond practitioners and academics, and to the empowerment of a younger generation of architects.
