Adrian Hermanides presents Judith Oscillations, a body of work consisting of prints, photographs, sculptures and text inspired by a perversion (or aberration) in his mother’s brain wave known as an essential tremor. It is manifest as an uncontrollable shake of the head, hands, arms, and tongue. Rooted in the electromagnetic systems of the brain, this tremor is said to oscillate at the range known as the “twilight state“ (which we normally only experience fleetingly upon waking, or drifting off to sleep). In this state we are in a waking dream, susceptible to hallucination and information beyond our normal conscious awareness. Hermanides uses this unusual wave formation as a metaphor to connect such diverse phenomena as rastafarianism, El nino, interference deformations, gender indentity, subjectivity and otherness.
The exhibition is accompanied by a number of public events. At the film screenings on 28 January and 4 February, the artist will show curated programmes of film contributions from a team of international artists including Emily Richardson, Hast Duo, James Richards, Johannes Raether, Lars Laumann, Marthe Thorshaug, Max Factory, Steve Reinke and Voin de Voin.
BIOGRAPHY
Adrian Hermaides (born in Zimbabwe, 1972) holds a diploma in Fine Art from the Natal Technikon. Recent projects include the 2009 exhibitions Unload (Knoth and Kruger, Berlin), Psychometry (Arratia Beer, Berlin), Art Brussels (Galerie 5213), Macho in Andromeda (Francesco Pantaleone Arte Contemporanea, Palermo), Neues Museum (Basso Studios, Berlin) and Rooms Without Walls (Hayward Gallery, London). Hermanides currently lives and works in Berlin.
